Appraisal Information

back to home page

Due to the success of the television program, "Antiques Roadshow," many people have the misconception that an "appraisal" is an instantaneous, on-the-spot thing. That is not the case for a "real" appraisal.

A true, professional appraisal must be in writing. The appraiser must personally examine the items to be appraised and perform extensive research. Photographs are taken as well. The report will list each items individually, along with a description of the item, its appraised value, and the market data used to obtain such information.

There are various reasons why an individual may seek a professional appraisal. These include, but are not limited to, appraisals for insurance coverage; appraisals for estate liquidation; appraisals for divorce settlements; appraisals for the IRS, for example, to determine the value for tax deduction of an item which is donated to a museum or charity, and more.

Insurance coverage is very important. Say you have a dining table which is from the early 1800s, the Federal period. This table could be worth tens of thousands of dollars. However, if your house burns down, your insurance company will only give you the money to replace a standard, new dining room table -- think Ikea, Pottery Barn -- perhaps a few hundred dollars.

In order to have your table properly covered for your insurance, you must obtain a professional, written appraisal and submit it to your insurance agent. Your agent will then handle the aspects of getting PROPER coverage for the true replacement value of a comparable table.

I have studied at the College for Appraisers in Placentia, California. I am also a licensed California Attorney, which helps me to understand the proper evidence and attention to detail which is required in order to have a document stand up in a court of law. I am in the Pasadena, California area and can do appraisals in Los Angeles and Orange Counties and surrounding areas.
